French far-right politician Damien Rieu has apologized for misidentifying popular video game creator Hideo Kojima as the suspected killer of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Rieu shared, "I naively took a joke for information. I didn't think someone would make a joke about someone being murdered, but it was my fault for not fact-checking before sharing. My apologies to #HideoKojima and to #MetalGear.”
Damien Rieu had previously shared a Tweet claiming that left-wing factions were behind the murder case that occurred during Shinzo Abe's campaign speech in Nara on Friday, July 8, 2022. Three photos of Hideo Kojima on Twitter were also shared by Rieu. Two of the photos show Hideo Kojima with an image of the Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. In one photo, Kojima is carrying a tote bag with Guevara's face on it and in another he's posing next to a framed piece of art.
The mistaken identification of Hideo Kojima had an impact on Rieu's Tweet posting and on Greek state television news as well. A news segment on Greece's state TV ANT1 shared the same image of Kojima, identifying him as the suspected killer of Shinzo Abe. ANT1 TV Greece immediately took down the video on YouTube on Friday, July 8, 2022.
Shinzo Abe's real killer, Tetsuya Yamagami, has confessed to his actions to the police, and admitted that he wanted Abe dead because he was disappointed and angry with him. The police have learned that Tetsuya had served in the Marine Special Forces and taught the unit at the Medical School on Physiotherapy for dementia patients.
Police arrested a 41-year-old suspect named Tetsuya Yamagami, who lives in the city of Nara, in the case of Abe's murder on Friday, July 8, 2022. NHK reports that Yamagami was a former Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force member for three years until 2005. News reports stated that the weapon used in the attack appeared to be an artificial one.
The Twitter account of Kojima Productions issued a statement on Saturday, July 9, 2022, condemning fake news about Kojima. The statement announced that the company could take legal action over the incident.
