Minions: The Rise of Gru is finally out in theaters after 2 years of delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For fans of the hilarious animations of the Despicable Me film series, Minions: The Rise of Gru is definitely a film to look forward to. Because in this film, Gru's childhood and the beginning of his collaboration with the Minions are revealed.

Are you curious about Minions: The Rise of Gru which presents this retro feel? Read the following review!

The Story of Gru and the Minions in the 1970s

Minions: The Rise of Gru utilizes a retro style, which has its roots in its time setting in the 1970s. From the first frame of this film, Minions: The Rise of Gru displays a variety of bright colors in the style of the 1970s. However, the style of bright colors is not a choice of artwork that persists throughout this film. After its opening scene, the film decided to return to being a film with the hallmarks of the Illumination studio animation.

The artwork around the edges of the character's sharp-edged aesthetic of Despicable Me’s villain clashes with the studio's signature Illumination animation style, just as stunningly as in previous films. The city setting of San Francisco allows the film's action scenes to take advantage of the winding hills of the mountains to great effect.

The funny way this film depicts Gru (Steve Carrell) who is smaller than the previous Despicable Me films and lacks legitimacy is also very well done. Some oddities such as a truncated secret lab, and minimalist gadgets, are all very interestingly displayed in this film.

Gru's Ambition to Become a Famous Villain

Minions: The Rise of Gru's narration tells the story of a notorious team of criminals called The Vicious Six, who open a vacancy for a new member. Gru, still an ambitious petty criminal, hopes to join The Vicious Six and sends his proposal. Gru comes to an admissions interview, but unfortunately, he gets turned down. However, in a major event, Gru teams up with his former Vicious Six leader and idol (Alan Arkin) to race for the magical MacGuffin before the Vicious Six can get it.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is a pretty interesting story, and even at its weakest point, it's still good enough to stand on its own. This movie allows Gru and all these cool villain characters to stretch their legs. Gru becomes a cute little charismatic man with big ambition and motivation as well. The other villain characters in this film even get great moments of comedy and tragedy.

A Prequel to Despicable Me That Fans Must Watch

As the title suggests Minions: The Rise of Gru, this film divides an equal portion between Gru and the Minions. While focusing on Gru's actions in his youth, the film too often features comedy scenes focused on Minions that last much longer than they should. That's why the Minions share the screen with Gru fairly in this film.

Honestly, this movie is just a prequel to Despicable Me. An opportunity to bring something new and fresh to the show with the kid's version of Despicable Me's main character Gru. It's as if Minions: The Rise of Gru had a 60-page concept as a prequel to Gru's character, but realized that wouldn't be enough for a full-fledged feature film, which is why Illumination Studios seemed to cram another 30 pages of Minions to fill the film's runtime.

As has happened, initially the Minions were just a side character in Despicable Me, but because of their uniqueness and cuteness, the yellow monsters seem to rival Gru's popularity in the eyes of the audience.

If you are a fan of Despicable Me and also like Minions, Minions: The Rise of Gru is a must-watch because it is an interesting and exciting prequel film!

Well, that's the discussion of Minions: The Rise of Gru, the story of Gru's childhood with the Minions. Do you think Minions: The Rise of Gru is the best film in the Despicable Me series? You can write your opinion in the comments column.
